TMJ Disorder

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on the spine. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is a common condition that affects the joints that connect the jawbone to the skull. It can cause pain, tenderness, and limited jaw movement. While chiropractic care is not traditionally considered a treatment for TMJ, some chiropractors may use techniques such as spinal manipulation and adjustments to help alleviate the symptoms of TMJ.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side, allowing us to speak, chew, and yawn. It is made up of the jawbone, the skull, and a disc of cartilage that acts as a cushion between the two bones. When this joint becomes damaged or misaligned, it can cause a range of symptoms, including pain, clicking or popping in the jaw, and difficulty opening the mouth.

TMJ is a multifactorial condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, injury, jaw misalignment, and teeth grinding or clenching. While traditionally treated by dentists, some chiropractors may use different therapies to help alleviate symptoms associated with TMJ.

Chiropractors may use spinal manipulation, also known as adjustments, to help improve the function of the TMJ. Adjustments can help to reduce pain and inflammation in the joint, and improve the range of motion of the jaw. Additionally, they may use soft tissue therapies such as massage or myofascial release to help relax the muscles of the jaw, neck, and shoulders that can contribute to TMJ symptoms.

Some chiropractors may also focus on exercises to help improve the alignment and function of the TMJ. These exercises may include jaw stretches, opening and closing exercises, and exercises to improve posture.

It is important to note that not all chiropractors are trained to treat TMJ. At Aden Chiropractic, located on Bainbridge Island, Washington, Dr. Jeremiah Aden DC specializes in treating TMJ, focusing not only on the jaw, but the neck and surrounding soft tissues.
